Data from the 2019 National Health Interview Survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db414.htm#section_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examined hearing difficulties among adults in the United States.<\/a> They found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Among adults aged 45 and over, men were more likely than women to have had some or a lot of difficulty or could not hear at all.<\/li><li>In 2019, 7.1% of adults aged 45 and older used a hearing aid, and that use was higher among men than women in all age groups.<\/li><li>16.7% of men and 10.6% of women aged 45\u201364 had some difficulty hearing even when using a hearing aid, increasing to 30.9% of men and 23.5% of women aged 65 and over.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While the data demonstrates a clear gender gap between men and women, the explanation as to why has less to do with gender and more to do with lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Noise-Induced Hearing Loss <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/sandiegoent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/jeriden-villegas-VLPUm5wP5Z0-unsplash-1280x853.jpg\" alt=\"Man working construction.\" class=\"wp-image-2550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandiegoent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/jeriden-villegas-VLPUm5wP5Z0-unsplash-1280x853.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/sandiegoent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/jeriden-villegas-VLPUm5wP5Z0-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sandiegoent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/jeriden-villegas-VLPUm5wP5Z0-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sandiegoent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/jeriden-villegas-VLPUm5wP5Z0-unsplash-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeated exposure to noise above 85 decibels (dB) can cause noise-induced <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegoent.com\/hearing\/hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss. <\/a>The louder the noise, the less time it takes for damage to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some common sounds that are at or above 85dB include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>City traffic: 80-85 dB<\/li><li>Motorcycles: 95 dB<\/li><li>Sporting events: 100 dB<\/li><li>Ambulance sirens: 120 dB<\/li><li>Firecrackers: 140 dB<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities like hunting, riding motorcycles, attending rock concerts or mowing the lawn can all put a person at risk for noise-induced hearing loss. In general, more men regularly engage in these activities than women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, jobs like manufacturing, construction and being in the military remain male-dominated fields. These jobs often expose workers to loud noises on a regular basis throughout the years. Without proper protection, the risk of damage to the ear is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to Protect Your Ears<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of gender, if you engage in activities either through work or as a hobby that exposes yourself to loud noises, you are at a higher risk for hearing loss.
