Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reposition the ears to create a more natural and balanced appearance. It is most commonly performed to correct ears that stick out prominently (also known as protruding ears), but it can also address size discrepancies, deformities present from birth or changes due to injury.
Even subtle changes to the ears can have a powerful impact on facial harmony and self-confidence—especially in children and teens.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?
Ideal candidates for otoplasty:
- Are in good general health and free of conditions that may impair healing
- Have fully developed ears (typically age 5 or older)
- Are bothered by the appearance of prominent, misshapen or asymmetrical ears
- Understand the risks, benefits and limitations of the procedure
This surgery is appropriate for both children and adults and is often performed on both ears to maintain symmetry.
How the Procedure Works
Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation for adults, or general anesthesia for children, and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is done at an accredited surgical center.
- Incisions are made discreetly behind the ear or within the natural ear folds.
- Excess cartilage may be removed or reshaped.
- The ear is then repositioned closer to the head and secured with internal sutures.
- Great care is taken to avoid overcorrection, preserving a natural-looking contour without a “pinned back” appearance.
Recovery and Results
After surgery, soft dressings or bandages will be applied to support the new ear shape. You may experience mild discomfort, swelling and bruising, typically improving within the first week. Most patients:
- Return to school or work within 5–7 days
- Are advised to avoid sleeping on their sides for several weeks
- Should wear a light headband at night to protect the ears during healing
Results are typically visible immediately once bandages are removed, and the final shape continues to refine as swelling subsides.
