Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that improves the nose’s shape, size and proportions. It can also correct internal structural issues that affect breathing, offering both cosmetic and functional benefits.
Whether your goal is a subtle refinement or a transformative change, Dr. Carolyn Montes takes a personalized approach to ensure your nose complements your natural facial features while preserving or improving nasal function.
What Can Rhinoplasty Address?
Aesthetic Concerns:
- A nose that feels too large or out of proportion
- A dorsal hump or bump on the bridge of the nose
- Asymmetry or crookedness
- A drooping, wide, or upturned nasal tip
- Wide nostrils or poor tip definition
Functional Concerns:
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Deviated septum
- Collapsing nasal valves
- Post-traumatic nasal deformity
- Congenital or developmental airway obstruction
Rhinoplasty can also be combined with septoplasty or nasal valve repair to improve airflow while refining the outer appearance of the nose.
Surgical Approach and Recovery
Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. Dr. Montes will use either a closed approach (with incisions hidden inside the nostrils) or an open approach (with a small incision across the columella), depending on your anatomy and goals.
Through these incisions, the nasal structures are carefully reshaped—by removing, adding, or repositioning cartilage and bone—to create a balanced, functional result. For patients with functional breathing issues, internal structures such as the septum and nasal valves may be corrected simultaneously.
After surgery:
- A splint is applied to protect the nose and maintain its new shape; it is typically removed after one week
- Mild bruising and swelling are normal, especially around the eyes, and gradually improve over 1–2 weeks
- Most patients feel comfortable returning to light social or work activities within 7–10 days
- Results evolve gradually as swelling fully resolves over the course of 6–12 months
Dr. Montes provides detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to support a smooth recovery and lasting outcome.

- Feel that your nose does not match the rest of your facial features
- Have breathing issues due to nasal obstruction or injury
- Are in good general health and have realistic expectations
- Are seeking a long-term solution to cosmetic or functional nasal concerns
